Guatemala: The 2nd Nation

Guatemala with a little less fanfare than the American opening became the second country to move their Embassy from Tel Aviv to Yerushalayim today.  I thought that I should note the following:

Thank you to the descendants of another great ancient Civilization, the Mayans. They are the nation of Ophir ben Yoktan (Yucatan) who sent tons of gold (420 kikar of gold to be exact) to King Shlomo to build the First Temple in Yerushalayim, dutifully recorded in the Book of Kings. In the great merit of those who sent the gold from the Biblical El Dorado for this holy purpose, you have been given the privilege to be the second nation to open your Embassy in the City of Yerushalayim of Gold.

UPDATE: For those who may want a source as to how we know that the descendants of Yoktan went to the New World, we have the following verses from Chapter 10 of Bereishit:
ה  וּלְעֵבֶר יֻלַּד, שְׁנֵי בָנִים:  שֵׁם הָאֶחָד פֶּלֶג, כִּי בְיָמָיו נִפְלְגָה הָאָרֶץ, וְשֵׁם אָחִיו, יָקְטָן. 25 And unto Eber were born two sons; the name of the one was Peleg; for in his days was the earth divided; and his brother's name was Yoktan.
כו  וְיָקְטָן יָלַד, אֶת-אַלְמוֹדָד וְאֶת-שָׁלֶף, וְאֶת-חֲצַרְמָוֶת, וְאֶת-יָרַח. 26 And Yoktan begot Almodad, and Sheleph, and Hazarmaveth, and Jerah;
כז  וְאֶת-הֲדוֹרָם וְאֶת-אוּזָל, וְאֶת-דִּקְלָה. 27 and Hadoram, and Uzal, and Diklah;
כח  וְאֶת-עוֹבָל וְאֶת-אֲבִימָאֵל, וְאֶת-שְׁבָא. 28 and Obal, and Abimael, and Sheba;

כט  וְאֶת-אוֹפִר וְאֶת-חֲוִילָה, וְאֶת-יוֹבָב; כָּל-אֵלֶּה, בְּנֵי יָקְטָן. 29 and Ophir, and Havilah, and Jobab; all these were the sons of Yoktan.

Some commentators refer to "the earth was divided" statement as referring to the Dispersion of the nations at the Tower of Bavel.  The problem with that interpretation is that all 70 nations were dispersed, not just Peleg and Yoktan.  So the verse must refer to something else, something that G-d knew and that our sages may have not known about because of the generation in which they lived.  The fact is that HaShem created a vast ocean between EurAsia/ Africa and the Americas.  The ancients knew that this expanse existed.  Apparently, the sons of Eber who were Peleg and Yoktan decided to split the world between them.  The descendants of Peleg stayed in EurAsia/ Africa while the descendants of Yoktan eventually went to the Americas.  I heard this in the name of Rav Matityahu Glazierson Shlit"a.  I will have to find his discussion on this another time.  There is another implication from all this.  Notice that Yoktan had a son whose name was also Chavilah, just like Kush had a son with the identical name.  We learn from the 2nd chapter of Bereishit that the River Pishon flows around the Land of Chavilah, but the Torah does not tell us WHICH Chavilah.  If it is the Chavilah, the son of Kush, the reference would be to the Nile River as being the River Pishon, but if it is the Chavilah in the New World, then PiShoN might be the MiSSiSSiPPi.  Notice that Pishon is the name Mississippi backwards using Grimm's Laws of etymology where Ns and Ms are linguistically interchangeable.  So while Ophir stayed and built his Civilization around the Yucatan Peninsula, Chavilah migrated north to another Pre-Columbian Civilization in the Mid- Mississippi River Valley.  A larger discussion of the implications of this can continue in the Comments.

Well, I have a totally different opinion about Havilah and Ophir. Actually I wrote a research paper about it 10-15 years ago, a copy of which I have here, but which I will not share because it contains information I want to keep private. All I can tell you is that I came to a conclusion that is diametrically different from yours - or Rav Glazerson, whoever's.

I remember learning that this second dispersion was created when the original whole land mass separated into the continents that we have now and oceans flowed between them and destroyed some places because of the water displacement. People became separated who originally lived near each other. That's why certain species of the same animals are found very far from each other and the continents shapes fit into the others like puzzle pieces. In the future world, these land masses will rejoin again and people will be able to walk into Israel from land bridges created on the Mediterranean.

An interesting thing I read today was about how a Pakistani commander said they could destroy Israel in less than 12 minutes. http://muslimcouncil.org.hk/we-can-destroy-israel-in-less-than-12-minutes-says-pakistani-commander/

It reminded me of the Vilna Goan who said the war of Gog and Magog would take 12 minutes. Does this seem to you like it has some special meaning?

I wanted to discuss before Shavuot, Rashi's commentary on the River Pishon and how it can only be understood at the level of Drush. Whenever the Nile is referred to in Tana"kh, it is called the Ye'or. Throughout Shemot is is always called the Ye'or. In Yeshayahu 19, a prophesy about Mitzraim at the End of Days, the Nile is called the Ye'or. In one pasuk, verse 7

ז עָרוֹת עַל-יְאוֹר, עַל-פִּי יְאוֹר; וְכֹל מִזְרַע יְאוֹר, יִיבַשׁ נִדַּף וְאֵינֶנּוּ. 7 The mosses by the Nile, by the brink of the Nile, and all that is sown by the Nile, shall become dry, be driven away, and be no more.

the Nile is called the Ye'or THREE TIMES! So throughout the 24 books of Scripture, the Nile is the Ye'or. So if the Pishon is called the Nile by Rashi in the second chapter of Bereishit, that Peirush is most certainly true on the level of Drush (metaphor), but on the level of p'shat the Nile is the Ye'or. I will continue this discussion later.

Two interesting books.

On the subject of Peleg and the division of the land and how the earth has changed geologically many times since creation, and how carbon dating cannot be relied on, and a discussion of what the flood of Noach really was, is Rabbi Dovid Brown's "Mysteries of the Creation."

On the subject of Yuktan, Ophir, and the Mayan society, is Rav Mattityahu Glazerson and Professor Haralick's "TheMayan Culture and Judaism."

Wishing you all Shabbat Shalom and Chag Shavuaot Sameach.

FLASH NEWS: "A Syrian military academy situated there serves as an Iranian/HIzballah intelligence war room and an Iranian electronic warfare facility. The explosions were reported by Sky News in Arabic with no official confirmation or indication of what caused them. If confirmed, this would appear to be the second pinpointed attack in four days on an Iranian military target in Syria.” DEBKAfile
